The story of Kanakadhara Stotram – Part 2

Adi Shankara was touched by this woman’s devotion and he began singing a beautiful Sanskrit hymn to Goddess Mahalakshmi. He sang about how compassionate and loving she is, and he asked her to have mercy on this poor woman.

Mahalakshmi Devi replied to Shankara that this lady had done no good deeds in her past lifetimes and that she didn’t deserve wealth or good fortune now. Shankara argued that there could be no higher act of charity than the woman donating her last morsel of food to a mendicant and lamenting that it wasn’t enough.

He told the Devi that a person who thought of another person before even thinking of themselves deserved the Mother’s grace. After all, what was the poor woman going to eat after she gave away that last gooseberry?
