Materials

A lingam (The phallus. A symbolic representation of the god Shiva)

A grating upon which to place the lingam

A tub over which to place the grating

Approximately one quart of rum

About a pound of honey

Three quarts of warm water

Some red flowers

Some incense

Some vijaya (A magickal herb intimately connected with Tantric ritual; see Bharati's The Tantric Tradition, page 235)

Setup

Place the lingam on the grating and the grating over or into the tub. Have the honey, rum, flowers, incense and camphor-burning lamp nearby. Light the candles behind the tub. If you wish, other magickal objects or icons may be placed as one sees fit around the tub as well. Before beginning the ritual, perform ritual cleansing with clean water (or at least have a shower).

Rites

1. Partake of some vijaya that has been left as an offering to a lingam.

2. Upon exhalation, repeat the following:

Om bharanavyasa, Om ravanavyasa, Om vamanavyasa

(Om to him who dwells in maintenance, Om to him who dwells in withdrawal, Om to him who dwells in creation)

3. Perform diwali (waving of the lit camphor lamp around the lingam and participants).

4. Say aloud (while visualizing):

We worship the Five-Faced Lord who dispels anxiety with his terrific roar.

We worship Him with five mouths filled with fangs, with fearsome eyes, enthroned upon a lion seat, with the moon as his diadem, carrying a skull bowl and a skull staff, bearing a cleaver and a goad, with hands granting boons and dispelling fear.

5. Repeat the names of the eight Bhairavas (following). With each repetition, touch folded hands to forehead, throat and heart:

Om namah Asitanga

Om namah Ruru

Om namah Canda

Om namah Krodha

Om namah Unmatta

Om namah Kapali

Om namah Bhisana

Om namah Samhara

6. Honey is slowly poured over the lingam while chanting the six-syllabled mantra:

Om namah Shivaya

7. Flowers are placed upon the lingam while the six-syllabled mantra is again chanted.

8. Incense is offered by waving over the lingam while the six-syllabled mantra is chanted.

9. Rum is poured over the lingam while the six-syllabled mantra is chanted.

10. Om namah Bhairava is chanted 108 times while meditating upon the form of Bhairava as described above. Water is poured over the lingam to clean it. All of this is collected in the tub.

11. Perform diwali again.

12. All share the prasad in the tub (Tangatarai)
