This festival celebrating Lord Nataraja will run from Thursday, January 1st to Saturday, January 10th, 2009. At the Rajarajeswai Peetam, the festival is celebrated every morning at 5 a.m., with a puja to the Nataraja moorthi that lasts about one-and-a-half hours.
The puja commences with the singing of songs designed to awaken each of the moorthis in the temple. These songs are called the Thirupalliyellichi.
After this ritual, the devotees present for the pooja do one pradakshanam of the temple and yajnashala area for every verse that is sung from the set of songs called the Tiruvempavi.
At the end of each verse and pradakshanam, panchaupacharam puja is performed to Nataraja. The last day of the festival is Arudra Darshanam, which is one of the holiest days of the year for Shaivites—this is the day in the temple when Nataraja receives abhishekam.
